Frequently asked questions

  • A Home Care Package is a government-subsidised program that provides funding to older Australians to help them live independently at home. It offers a range of services, such as personal care, domestic assistance, nursing, and allied health support, tailored to meet the individual’s specific needs.

  • To qualify for a Home Care Package, you need to be assessed by the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) or the Aged Care Assessment Service (ACAS in Victoria). The assessment determines your care needs and assigns you to one of four levels of Home Care Packages, ranging from basic care (Level 1) to high-level care (Level 4). If you need assistance in accessing a Home Care Package contact our consultant for support.

  • Home Care Packages are flexible and can include a variety of services, such as help with showering, dressing, meal preparation, cleaning, transport, nursing care, medication management, and access to allied health services like physiotherapy or podiatry. The services are tailored to your personal care needs and goals.

  • While the Australian government subsidises the majority of the costs, you may be required to contribute towards your Home Care Package depending on your financial situation. This can include a basic daily fee and an income-tested care fee. However, many people may not have to pay these fees, depending on their income and circumstances.

  • You need to start by contacting My Aged Care to arrange an assessment. After the assessment, you’ll be notified of the level of Home Care Package you are eligible for. You can then choose a provider to manage your care package and help you access the services you need.

  • There are four levels of Home Care Packages, each catering to different levels of care needs:

    • Level 1: Basic care needs
    • Level 2: Low-level care needs
    • Level 3: Intermediate care needs

    • Level 4: High-level care needs

The higher the level, the more funding and services you can receive.

  • Yes, you are free to change providers if you are not happy with the services or care you are receiving. Your Home Care Package funding will move with you, but it’s important to check the terms of your agreement with your current provider.

  • If your care needs increase, you can request a reassessment from ACAT to see if you qualify for a higher-level Home Care Package. Similarly, if your needs decrease, your package can be adjusted to ensure you’re receiving the appropriate level of care.

  • Wait times for a Home Care Package can vary depending on demand and the level of care you need. For higher-level packages (Level 3 or 4), the waiting period may be longer, sometimes up to a year or more. However, interim support may be provided while you wait for your package.

  • Yes, Home Care Packages can cover a wide range of services, including assistance with gardening, home modifications (such as installing ramps or grab rails), and other services that help you remain safe and independent at home.
